Underlay is assessed separately, and is replaced more often than the carpet above it — foam and fibre underlay absorb a large volume of water relative to their thickness and are slow and difficult to dry fully in place, so even when carpet is saved, new underlay is frequently needed underneath it.
Hard flooring outcomes vary by material. Solid timber can sometimes be dried and refinished if caught early, though cupping or gapping may remain. Laminate flooring is more vulnerable, since its core swells when wet and rarely returns to its original shape once delamination starts. Tile itself is largely unaffected by water, but a wet subfloor or adhesive bed beneath it still needs to be dried, which can mean lifting tiles in some cases. Vinyl varies by installation type — sheet vinyl can trap moisture against the subfloor underneath it, while some vinyl plank products are more water-tolerant but still need the subfloor beneath checked.
